# Knowledge bases

> Upload unstructured documents and build searchable knowledge indexes

Knowledge bases store your unstructured data — PDFs, reports, presentations, wiki exports, and other documents. Wayak indexes them for fast retrieval and gives the agent the ability to read and reason over the full content.

## What knowledge bases do

1. **Retrieval index** — Wayak builds a search index over your documents so the agent can quickly find relevant passages
2. **Full document access** — The agent can pull and read entire files when it needs deeper context, not just matched snippets

## What you can upload

* PDFs and documents
* Presentations and slide decks
* Internal wiki exports
* Research papers and reports
* Any text-based file

## How it differs from the lakehouse

The lakehouse handles structured, tabular data (spreadsheets, CSVs). Knowledge bases handle narrative, free-form content (documents, reports). Use both together for complete coverage of your organization's data.
